Round and round and round and round.....

I'm feeling a lot like this water wheel lately.  Yet again, and this time with much more fuss and bother than the last two times, our buyer's financing plans fell through at the very last minute.  The result is that the sale of this place will not be happening, at least not in the near future.  After two years the plan to relocate has taken its toll, and it is just not feasible or fair to continue.  Too many important things have been getting put off for too long.  So this morning we made it official...we took down the sign and concluded our business relationship with the most awesome realtor in the world (Don Scott at Coldwell Banker in Sparta).  Maybe we will revisit the idea in a few years, but for now that is it.

It is somewhat disappointing, but we do love it out here in the woods.
So until next month, we will be unpacking and picking the wild blueberries which are ripening wonderfully right now!

Big News!

When one door closes, another opens.

It is with bittersweet pleasure that I announce the re-location of Jonderson Photography.  After a year of planning and preparation, next month we will be moving from the woods back to "civilization", just outside the city of Grand Rapids.  After ten years in the woods I am sure I will miss it, but the city presents new opportunities and greater access to resources than the woods does.

If any local publishers would be interested in backing a photographic retrospective of those ten years, I am pretty keen on putting one together.  Just contact us via the jonderson.com website.  In the meantime, I am off to do one more major shoot before beginning the packing in earnest.

Spring is winding down

And summer is cranking up!

OK, enough winch jokes.  This old rusty winch was spotted while out shooting last week, and I knew the minute I saw it that it would make a good shot.  I am a sucker for symmetry and repeated patterns.  I went macro because the texture on the rust was so fine, and kept a nice tight depth of field to exaggerate the size.  If you look closely, you can just make out the ball bearings in the housing!

Spring in full swing

It must be spring, as all the birds are busy building nests and then sitting on them diligently.  This mourning dove is no exception.  Spring is all about new life, and I encourage you to spend time outdoors to see it yourself.  Even if you live in the city, you don't have to miss it if you learn to recognize it for what it is.  Dandelions coming up in sidewalk cracks...that is new life as well!

Took this two nights ago.  I went out because the fog was coming in and the moon was up.  I was hoping that the combination would lend itself to some good shots, but the timing of the two didn't work well until it was too dark.  So I did other things instead, including this.

I have been asked on more than one occasion if I always use tight focal planes.  The answer is no, but I do tend to favor them when shots have a singular defined subject, or multiple subjects in the same plane.  I do this because that is how your brain interprets the data being sent to it by your eyes, which makes for a more natural looking image, especially when you see them in person in larger formats than you do via computer. 


I highly encourage people to visit art museums in person rather than just browsing galleries online for just that reason.  You are missing a very important element of the work if you are not seeing it first hand! 

And now for something completely different....

Something surreal, and in square format.  Two things I don't do a lot of. 
But it is the dead of winter, which for me means time to play around and have fun pushing all sorts of boundaries, my own included.
And at -25F believe me, boundaries are being pushed!
I am SO ready for spring!
